This is another unusual piece that I have had in my collection for many years. It clearly is a make-do in that there is another straw-filled, flannel covered animal underneath the brownish-green wool covering. It was not uncommon for mothers to re-make cloth dolls for younger children, and it appears that this must have been the intention in this case. Perhaps, the animal below was worn and in need of a fresh look for the next child. At any rate, the end result in this case was a charming animal: part dog-like, part seal-like in appearance.

Measuring 12 inches long by 2 inches broad by 10 inches tall his wool covering is completely hand-stitched. He has white porcelain buttons for eyes and a stitched mouth and nose.

When I bought him many years ago, I was told he was purchased at an Ohio Amish farm sale. He is such that only a mother could love...or an advanced collector.
