Late 19th C Pennsylvania Puzzle Ball
Late 19th C Pennsylvania Puzzle Ball

A favorite type of pin cushion/whimsy of both Amish and Mennonite women was the puzzle ball.  Made from strips of various and sundry fabrics, stuffed to form something similar to an orange wedge when sewn shut, they were then pieced into a ball form. They are as varied in color combinations, decoration and skill levels as their makers.

Offered first for you consideration is a blue and black velvet one with glass button embellishment. It measures approximately 3 inches in diameter and is in excellent condition.  As in keeping with the Mennonite and Amish religious belief that nothing is perfect save The Creator, one of the wedges has been deliberately covered in a turquoise crepe.

Puzzle balls look great when sitting “en masse” in an old wooden bowl, or sitting lone on a table or shelf amidst a gathering of sewing items.
